the myth of moderate feminism

Some interesting feminism-related stuff on the web at the moment. Much of it concerns Jeanette Kupferman, a radical feminist in the 1960s and now a woman in her 70s. She’s now a grandmother and wondering if the world feminism has created is really going to be good for her granddaughter.

Her doubts on this subject prompted these questions at The Knight and Drummer - Can a feminist be redeemed? Can a feminist  eventually turn out to be a good woman after all?

Reading what Kupferman has to say, I think we can answer those questions in the negative.

The story has also been noted at Oz Conservative where it’s been pointed out that Kupferman still clings tenaciously to her core liberal and feminist beliefs.

A feminist cannot be redeemed unless she is prepared to abandon feminism in its entirety. The truth is that there is no such thing as a moderate feminist, or a reasonable moderate feminist. Feminism is based on a fundamentally mistaken view of human nature. It’s wrong right from the get-go. There’s no way to do what Kupferman would like to do, to salvage the good bits of feminism. What she sees as the good bits are actually the very things that make it an unworkable and catastrophic ideology.

Also of interest in this context is this piece by Roosh V, Why The Female “Anti-Feminist” Is A Feminist In Disguise, in which he warns that women who claim to be anti-feminist should not be taken at face value.

I also read Dalrock’s blog fairly regularly. The comments are interesting as they provide a window into what really goes on inside mainstream American Protestant churches. The extent of the surrender to feminism is terrifying. The churches have made the classic mistake - they have assumed that with feminists they’re dealing with reasonable people. They have deluded themselves into thinking that there can be such a thing as a Christian feminist. It’s nonsense. You cannot be a Christian and a feminist. It simply isn’t possible. Women who claim to be Christian feminists are certainly feminists but they aren’t Christians.

Moderate feminists, like moderate liberals, are extremely dangerous because they can easily fool naïve conservatives into believing that feminists are capable of being reasoned with.

So can a feminist be redeemed? Yes, if she is prepared to admit that feminism is thoroughly and completely wrong from start to finish and if she is prepared to reject feminism totally and completely. Very very few feminists will do this.

Can a feminist  eventually turn out to be a good woman after all? No, not so long as she clings to any part of the feminist ideology.

  1. Feminism is a subtype of Leftism - which is anti-Christian at root.

Feminism is wrong - but of course feminism contains significant truths and valid aspirations; as do all successful political ideologies - or else they could not succeed.

Therefore to reject feminism *in total* (as a secualr reaction against Leftism) is merely to fall into a different evil.

The answer is to have a higher Good which includes what is true and good in feminism: this higher Good is Christianity.

But that's pretty much the strategy the mainstream churches have adopted, with catastrophic results. They thought that Christian feminism was possible, but it isn't. If you accept any of the tenets of feminism then you have accepted liberal secularism and abandoned Christianity.

There's nothing true and good in feminism. Evil can wear a deceptive costume and make tempting promises but it's still evil. Christians have been remarkably naive when it comes to confronting feminism and liberalism.

In the main - no, nor her daughter ... but after that, maybe.

  3. @dod "There's nothing true and good in feminism." - You need to acknowledge that this is false: because there is truth and goodness in communism, fascism... in any reasonably successful but net-evil political movement.

Total evil is a self contradiction (being the *immediate* attempted destruction of all that is Good in everything, including oneself) and the closer we approach to it the more obviously false and undesirable it becomes.

All successful evil therefore includes good - especially in its early stages, when gathering support before attaining to power.

As Aristotle apprently said - most evil is the pursuit of partial good - that is why it is so difficult to deal with when a society (or person) focuses on a 'single issue' and ignores the overall situation (the virtue of 'prudence' is supposed to be exactly this balancing of rival 'goods').

So we cannot deal with something evil by opposing all its tenets - hat would ertainly lead to just a different kind of net-evil; we need a 'system' that integrates good according to some higher imperative.

Since all secular philosophies boil down to some version of short-term selfishness during mortal life tempered by some kind of utilitarianism (in order to get others to cooperate) - all these lead to much the same destination in the end; and to the current state of profound demotivation and despair evident from mass revealed preferences in The West.

I can see truth and goodness in communism and fascism, but not in feminism. Feminism is based on the false premise that the differences between men and women can somehow be magicked away. It's also based on the premise that only the masculine is worthwhile, that being a woman is worthless, and that therefore women need to turn themselves into men. An ideology built on lies cannot contain truth.

Communism and fascism are based on ideas that are not entirely unreasonable or false. They are ideologies that tend not to work very well in practice.

Feminism does incorporate seductive lies that foolish people can mistake for truth, but they are lies just the same.

So we cannot deal with something evil by opposing all its tenets

We cannot deal with ideologies that are based partly on reasonable ideas but opposing all their tenets. But out-and-out evil must be opposed by opposing it in toto. Feminism is like homosexuality. It's something that is evil all the way through. Compromising with such evils always leads to surrender. Christianity has destroyed itself by making such compromises.

and to the current state of profound demotivation and despair evident from mass revealed preferences in The West.

The demotivation and despair have been caused by attempts to compromise with things that can't be compromised with.

You can reason with a communist or a fascist. You can't reason with a feminist or a homosexual activist.
